The 2nd international meeting “Awareness Raising and Education on Biosafety and Biosecurity in Ukraine”

The 2nd international meeting “Awareness Raising and Education on Biosafety and Biosecurity in Ukraine” organized in the framework of the STCU project P633 funded by the Ministry of Defense of the United Kingdom was successfully held on 27-28 January, 2016 in Kyiv, Ukraine.
The Head of the Meeting Organizing Committee - Academician Serhiy Komisarenko, the project Partner - Mr. James Harrison from the UK Ministry of Defense and the STCU Executive Director Mr. Curtis Bjelajac welcomed the meeting which became an important milestone in implementation of the P633 project. In the framework of project the network of national life science experts was created (including web-platform for the specialists communication) and distribution of the best foreign experience in education on Biosafety and Biosecurity among the Ukrainian specialists was performed on the series of the Regional seminars. At the meeting, a one year extension of the STCU project P633 was signed by the Parties.



The current meeting brought together approximately 60 participants including 28 delegates from advanced Ukrainian Universities and 11 representatives from the Ukrainian Life Sciences Research Institutions. A number of noted foreign experts in Biosafety and Biosecurity took part at the meeting and presented their lectures, including Prof. Vladimir Zaviyalov (University of Turku , Finland), Prof. Paata Imnadze (Lugar National CDC, Georgia), Dr. Maria Rita Gismondo (L. Sacco University hospital, Milano, Italy), Prof. Lela Bakanidze (Georgian Biosafety Association, Georgia), Dr. Tatyana Novossiolova (Bradford University , UK). At the Meeting Round Table session the different aspects of the education and training in Biosafety, Biosecurity and Bioethics were discussed and the plan of activities on the extended period of the 633 STCU project (STCU project coordinator, Dr. V. Pashynska) were also developed.
