On July 16, 2013 Ambassador Michael Einik, STCU Executive Director and Mr. Michel Zayet, Deputy Executive Director (EU) met with Academician Volodymyr Morhun, Director of the Institute of Plant Physiology and Genetics, and his Deputy Director, Dr. Victor Schwartau, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
In the framework of the European Commission funded project "Development, training and coordination of the health-related projects for protection of the people living around the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone", a series of analysis are planned, requiring setting up a Department at the Ivankiv District Hospital for monitoring and analyzing the level of radio-elements exposure for a segment of local population.
By a separate Supply Contract, the European Commission will equip these groups of laboratories so they can offer modern support and cover the whole range of necessary studies.
Part of this equipment is a specialized Mass Spectrometer requiring specific technical premises that are currently not available at Ivankiv Hospital. Therefore, Academician Morhun, scientifically interested in the research to be carried out, generously offered temporarily hosting for the Mass Spectrometer in the Kiev-based Institute. This marks the beginning of a full-scale collaboration with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine by associating more researchers, facilities and equipment.
