Grant-Writing Workshop for Scientists

Successful grant applications make it possible for cash-strapped research institutes to get innovative ideas off the ground. Yet applying for and receiving grants is a very competitive process.

Due to overwhelming demand the STCU held a 2-day Grant Writing workshops for scientists at the Institute for Applied Problems of Mechanics and Mathematics NASU, in Lviv 23rd – 24th and the Institute of Single Crystal, NASU, in Kharkiv on the 26th and 27th October.

Although the focus was on former weapons scientists, the event was designed for both the novice and experienced grant seekers who are interested in increasing their fundraising competitiveness and focus. The workshop covered all aspects of searching for national and international grants and writing “tailored grant proposals”. The workshop included presentations from Western experts as well as STCU staff.

The workshop gave attendees a holistic view of the grant process, highlighting the relevance and importance of each phase. The major agenda topics were:
- The grant application process
- International collaboration significance
- Guidance for improving the quality of proposals
- What makes a good application
- The things review panels expect to see in grant proposals
- Using database resources for pertinent information input

The broad scope of instruction was designed to give attendees a crucial competitive advantage and emphasised the wide range of research tools available, including accessing the best online databases.

The workshop also included open discussion with scientists on different problems of the existing STCU grant process as well as grant writing in general. At both venues, registration was limited to 70 participants and was free of charge. To ensure National participation, the STCU provided a series of travel bursaries to facilitate participation of scientists from outside the cities of Lviv and Kharkiv.
