STCU Executive Director Attended the International Conference on Control and Security of Nuclear Materials in Ukraine and the G8 Global Partnership Agenda

STCU Executive Director Andrew Hood made a presentation on STCU to the International Conference”Control and Security of Nuclear Materials in Ukraine: Past Achievements and the Global Partnership Agenda Ahead” which took place in Kiev on January 24-26, 2006. In 2002, the G-8 members established the “Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction”, the multilateral effort committing $20 billion over 10 years to address WMD non-proliferation priorities, including nuclear safety and security. In 2004, the G-8 included Ukraine as a Global Partnership recipient status. State Nuclear Regulatory Committee of Ukraine, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, Gessellschaft fur Anlagen-und Reaktorsicherheit, and the Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate organized this Conference to focus on Ukraine’s Global Partnership participation.
Mr. Hood presented STCU activity in nuclear safety and material security/monitoring in Ukraine and other STCU recipient countries. Since 1995, STCU sponsored 59 nuclear safety/security related research projects in Ukraine, totaling over US$ 6.7 million and ˆ 640 000. Mr. Hood highlighted some of the most significant of these projects, including the successful Y2K Remediation Program at Ukraine‘s nuclear power plants.
The Conference included the representatives from US Department of State, US Department of Energy, UK Department of Trade and Industry, Swedish Parliament, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Canada and many other Governmental institutions. ISTC Deputy Executive Director Leo Owsiacki also gave an ISTC presentation at the Conference.
