Board 54, Hybrid in Brussels and via ZOOM and written procedure

May 4, 2022

Today, the Science and Technology Center in Ukraine (STCU) convened its 54th Governing Board meeting in Brussels, Belgium, in hybrid format. The STCU is an intergovernmental, non-profit organization, established in 1993 to support civilian science and technology partnerships and collaborations, that addresses global security threats and advances non-proliferation. Following Russia’s unprovoked assault on Ukraine, the STCU continues to work with its partners in Ukraine and the region, including through its branch offices in Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Moldova.

At today’s meeting, the European Union and United States Governing Board members expressed their steadfast commitment to their fellow Ukrainian Governing Board member and the entire STCU team, many of whom participated in the meeting virtually. The Parties’ commitment resulted in the approval of approximately $5.4M (equivalent to ˆ4.95M) in assistance programming, which included a ˆ3.6M (equivalent to $3.9M) project to provide equipment for modernization of the dosimetric control system in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone.

The EU and United States are working with the STCU, its sister center, the International Science and Technology Center in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, and the international scientific community to support Ukraine and STCU partners in the region to identify and support opportunities for Ukrainian scientists displaced by Russia’s illegal and unjustified military aggression to collaborate on scientific endeavors that advance global peace and prosperity. More details can be found on the STCU’s website.

The STCU Governing Board discussed and unanimously condemned Russia’s continued campaign of disinformation, falsehoods, and outright lies against Ukraine, the STCU, and its partners, which are an unsuccessful attempt by the Kremlin to create a false pretext for its horrendous actions. The STCU, its Governing Board members, and their partners in the scientific community stand together in support of Ukraine. The STCU will continue to carry out this important work to promote peaceful research and collaborations that advance our shared security, health, and safety.
